We believe that businesses have the power to make real, meaningful progress in securing a low-climate future. We worked with Climate Neutral, an independent non-profit, to measure our 2019 climate footprint, purchase climate credits to offset its entirety, and implement plans to reduce our emissions. We successfully completed all three steps, and now are Climate Neutral certified.
Conservation-Based Forest Management Project
The McCloud River Conservation-Based Forest Management Project is located 20 miles southeast of Mount Shasta in Northern California. Through conservation-based management of commercial timberlands, this project generates a return on investment to landowners. Sustainable forest management increases the total carbon stores and timber stocking on the site over time. Co-benefits such as protection of local water quality and habitat protection for sensitive species are achieved while timber is sustainably extracted to support the local economy. This project covers approximately 9,000 acres and comprises the largest working conservation easement west of the Rockies. It ensures that 15 square miles of forest and 8 miles of the famous McCloud River will be forested and productive in perpetuity.
Landfill Gas Combustion Project
The Spartanburg County project consists of a landfill gas collection system and three different destruction devices to combust the collected gas. The county partnered with Miliken Dewey Chemical Plant and Lockhart Power to utilize landfill gas from the Wellford Landfill in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The result is a one-of-a-kind multi-beneficial use project. The captured gas is piped 6.5 miles to the Miliken plant and is then used to replace natural gas in the boilers. The remaining gas goes through a treatment system and into a Caterpillar 3520C (1.6 MW) electricity generator engine.
